RICKY SEABRA : : : : : Only after "From Sand to Sea" premiered in Caracas did I realize that my knowledge of the medium of sand was greater than that of any other material I had ever worked with before. In fact I had worked with sand all my life the enumerous times I had gone to beaches and spent the day building sand sculptures and sand castels. In 1991 I started to develop a series of sand temples which caused very intrigued reactions in passers-by. It was then that I became interested in ephemeral forms of art: land-art and time-based art. I first started to experiment with "kolams" on stage which are mandala-like drawings that Hindu women make on the ground while they pray. I hence became sensitized to the sacred quality of sand and I realized that after producing a sand drawing that it must be treated with respect and cannot be erased gratuitously. This is why scenes in "From Sand to Sea" are carefully linked together and drawings are transformed. In this piece I have achieved my most ephermeral work yet. A work that, like the movement of a dancer, has a beginning middle and end in space and time. Unlike any art I have ever done this is probably the work that is most inside me, most undetachable from my body. ANDREA JABOR : : : : : From Sand to Sea is a project in which I search for an essential dance, honest, strong, and delicate in which I dance whole, body mind spirit, present and open to the public. It is not a narrative work but it manages to tell a story in a poetic way, going through different emotions and sensations seeking to touch people in a delicate fashion. The point of departure is the world of the traveller that lives between the crossing of a desert until her arrival at the sea. The source of this material comes from the years 95 and 96 when I lived between Brazil and Venezuela and I experimented with different rythmic possibilities with contemporary dance. As opposed to the experiences I had with dance in Europe during the years I lived in Holland, I felt clearly that latin rhythms are contagious and can enlighten the soul and free the body and mind guiding motions by rhythm and intutition. In this search for a new language of contemporary Brazilian dance I developed this piece in which I celebrate the rythmic, energetic and sensual essentials of dance.
